Did Somebody Say McDonald’s?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

McDonalds - its synomous with the American Way.  Right up there with Fourth of July and Apple Pie. Except that now they’re making some of their patties with beef shipped in all the way from New Zealand. That’s one hell of a carbon foot print.

McDonald’s Attempts to Buck Recession, Investors Cheer

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Minyanville is one of the more popular blogs with the investment banker set.  This morning they put the following alert out on McDonald’s:

One to Watch: McDonald’s (MCD) starts selling bigger burgers for $4 today. The timing of its premium Angus offering may seem odd in light of a recession and America’s avowed intent to lose weight. Will a clientele conditioned to value meals trade up? It’s a tall order but the company’s constant innovation is commendable and a reason it was one of only two Dow components, along with Wal-Mart (WMT), to make investors money in ‘08. Shares are down year-to-date but with its yield investors are paid to wait.

I am not sure who is sadder here: McDonalds charging more to make their customers fat in the midst of a recession, or Wall Street, who thinks this business model is fantastic news. Or is this all just hype to get extra foot traffic in the doors?

Or is it a sad statement about the food that Americans eat that a $4 burger is considered a pricey luxury? Living in a costal city, I can’t think of a single non-national non-fast-food chain near me that average cost per item is less than $4.  And how sad is it that most people would be hard pressed to find a pint of raspberries for under $4?  Gah, sometimes its hard to watch how destructive Americans can be when prioritizing the value of their food.
